We then meticulously document each asset’s value through appraisals. Ordinarily, we work with professional appraisers for items like real estate or artwork. This detailed inventory, along with the appraisal information, is filed with the court in a formal document called an Inventory and Appraisal (Form DE-160/161).
This step is fundamental because it provides a clear picture of the estate’s financial standing, which is essential for accurately distributing assets to heirs and beneficiaries. Moreover, it helps ensure transparency and accountability throughout the probate process.

Have you encountered any challenges during this stage of probate?

While most cases proceed smoothly, I recall one instance where locating a significant asset proved unexpectedly difficult. The deceased had invested in rare coins many years ago, but the documentation was incomplete. It took some detective work, tracing old correspondence and consulting with numismatic experts, before we could accurately identify and value the collection.
Ultimately, we were able to locate the coins and ensure they were included in the estate distribution. That experience highlighted the importance of meticulous record-keeping and the value of having an experienced attorney who can navigate complex situations.
